OUR MISSION

We are a non-partisan group of Clark Lake residents and friends doing everything we can to keep our lake clean, safe, and healthy.  We are working to have an ordinance passed in both Sevastopol and Jacksonport to protect Clark Lake from Enhanced Wake Boating/Wakesurfing.  It is the same ordinance that passed in 2025 to protect Kangaroo Lake.

WAKE ENHANCED BOATING - AN ENVIRONMENTAL AND SAFETY THREAT ON OUR LAKES

Wake surfing is a sport in which specially designed boats generate wakes 3 to 5 feet high, large enough to allow surfing even on small lakes.  The massive waves, downward propellor wash, ballast tanks and “bow high” boat orientation create profound safety and environmental problems.   Please take some time to look through our website to learn about the dangers and permanent damage these boats do to lakes less than  30' deep.  As you will see not even 2% of Clark Lake is 20' deep which means wake enhanced boats rip up the natural lake bed destroying the ecosystem which feed the fish and aquatic life.

The issue is specific to Enhanced Wake Boating - it does not include the activities of wakeboarding, tubing, or waterskiing.  As you can see below those activities do not negatively impact the lakebed.  We are only concerned with wake boats being used in a bow up stern down mode.  Wake boats can be used in planing mode (normal use) for all boating activities.

how did we get here and why is this so political

The Wake Enhanced Boating issue has a long and political background both locally and at the Capitol in Madison.  The boating lobby is powerful as Wake Enhanced Boats are very profitable; therefore, the lobby is well funded making this an extremely difficult fight for us.  Lakes At Stake has published regular newsletters which have significant information and context - if you are looking for much more detail click below.

Wisconsin Conservation Congress

The Wisconsin Conservation Congress is the only statutory body in the state where citizens elect delegates to advise the Natural Resources Board and the Department of Natural Resources on how to responsibly manage Wisconsin's natural resources for present and future generations. The Congress accomplishes this through open, impartial, broad-ranged actions.

THE PROOF IS IN THE SCIENCE

A new University of Minnesota study confirms that wakesurfing scours lakebeds, destroys fish habitat, and stirs up long-dormant pollutants in our glacial lakes (courtsey Lakes At Stake)

DNR Map Of Clark Lake

Clark Lake is approximately 865 acres.  As shown by the DNR map  above only about 2% of Clark Lake is deeper than 20 feet.  Lakes At Stake promotes safe Wake Surfing in 30+ feet of water.
